ドライビングシミュレーションプラットフォームと振動ツールキットは、実際の生活の中で潜在的なウェアラブルvibrotactileデバイスのアプリケーションを合理的に模倣し、運転関連の研究を調査する上で効果的な技術を提供しました。この技術を使用すると、高い構成性と手頃な価格の安全な実験環境が、現実世界の運転に匹敵する研究を行うことができます。
より注意が必要ないくつかのステップがあります。まず、"expconfig.txt"を使用した設定プロセス中に、実際の実験を行う前にトレーニングモードがFalseに設定されていることを確認して、練習用に設計された音声プロンプトをオフにする必要があります。第二に、ステアリングホイールのキャリブレーションプロセス中に、研究者はステアリングホイールの両方向の振幅がバランスを取り、ブレーキペダルとスロットルペダルの両方が完全に床に置かれていることを確認する必要があることに注意することが重要です。第三に、研究者は、運転シミュレーションが始まる前に、振動ツールキットが医療テープで参加者にしっかりと置かれているかどうかを調べる必要があります。

それにもかかわらず、提案された方法には限界がある。現実の環境では、身体的、認知的、行動的、知覚的能力などの相対的な要求を含む、さまざまな面で異なる運転能力とスキルが必要になります。コンテキスト決定要因に応じて、異なる程度の需要がドライバーの認知知覚スキルに課されます。例えば、ドライバーが軽い交通の晴れた天候の中で安全に運転するために必要な能力のレベルは、交通の激しい悪天候気象環境52での運転に比べて、より集中的になります。ドライビングシミュレータは、複雑な実世界の運転条件を完全にシミュレートすることはできませんが、実験の結果を汚染する可能性のある交和変数を排除するより制御された環境を提供できます。報告された運転シミュレータへの調整は、実験のニーズに応じて行うこともできます。それでも、この研究ラインの生態学的妥当性を高めるために、オンロード研究を行う必要があります。また、低コストのため、提示されたドライビングシミュレーションプラットフォームはモーションプラットフォームで構成されておらず、水平および縦方向の移動体験を提供することはできません。
例示的実験に対応して、振動はパッチ状道路上の走行などの外部コンテキストによって引き起こされる可能性があるが、運転シミュレーション中に参加者に車両振動は提供されなかった。しかし、提案された方法は、実験室の設定で車のフォロータスクで前車の速度とブレーキ間隔を制御することができ、参加者の運転困難を制御する能力を提供します。また、シミュレーション・シック53アンケート(SSQ)は実験に含まれていません。考慮が欠落しているにもかかわらず、各試験の長さが比較的短く、各試験の完了時にシミュレーション病の症状53を報告した参加者がいないため、結果は影響を受けなかった。この研究はまた、男性と女性の参加者の不均衡数を持っています.今後の研究では、適切なアンケート54を用いてシミュレーション病53の参加者を除外し、結果のより強い結論を達成するために同数の男女参加者を募集することを目指すべきである。
模範的な研究は、指、手首、寺院の警告条件、運転のみの制御条件の唯一の要因として振動警告位置を持つ被験者内設計車に続く実験です。今後は、胸部や耳の後ろなど、他の場所でさらなる試験を行い、今後の開発に向けてウェアラブルデバイスの代替場所を提供する予定です。さらに分析を行い、異なる条件にわたるブレーキペダル減速の変動を調べることができます。さらに、結果は、参加者が寺院エリアで最高レベルの振動を知覚することを示唆したが、それでも、この地域はまた、装置を配置するための最も好ましくない場所であった。また、寺院の振動強度を調整することでブレーキ反応への影響をさらに調べるのも興味深い。さらに、視覚および聴覚警告と比較して、vibrotactile 警告に含まれる情報は少なくなっています。複雑な情報を提供するためにどのようにバイブロタイル警告を使用できるかを調査するために、より多くの研究を行う必要があります。

Erratum: Tactile Vibrating Toolkit and Driving Simulation Platform for Driving-Related Research

研究者にとっては、仮想プラットフォームで運転実験を行うことは、リスクとコストが伴うため、現実の世界よりも実現可能です。たとえば、パフォーマンス指標の収集は困難であり、実際の世界で実験を行っている場合に関連する環境要因を制御することは困難です。その結果、近年、多くの研究では、オンロード走行研究を行うための代替手段として、PC上で実行されている固定ベースのドライビングシミュレータを使用しています。11年以上にわたり、運転研究コミュニティで学習、開発、研究を行った後、オープンソースのドライビングシミュレーションソフトウェアと、ステアリングホイールとギアボックス、3台のペダル、3台の搭載プロジェクター、3つのプロジェクタースクリーンなど、ハードウェアキットで構成された実車で運転シミュレーションプラットフォームを確立しました。ドライビングシミュレーションソフトウェアは単一の画面のみをサポートしており、提示されたプロトコルは中央プロジェクターとプロジェクタ画面のみを使用して実験を行いました。

提案されたドライビングシミュレータのもう一つの利点は、その低コストです。前述のように、導入されたドライビングシミュレーションソフトウェアは、ユーザーが無料で利用できるオープンソースソフトウェアです。さらに、このプロトコルでのハードウェア全体のセットアップの総コストは、典型的な高忠実度の商用ドライビングシミュレータと比較して低くなります。図 1 a と b は、3000 ドルから 30000 ドルまでのコストで 2 つのドライビング シミュレータの完全なセットアップを示しています。対照的に、典型的な高忠実度の商業運転シミュレータ(固定ベース)は、通常約$ 10,000から$100,000の費用がかかります。その非常に手頃な価格で、このドライビングシミュレータは、学術研究の目的だけでなく、運転クラス19を実施し、運転関連技術20、21のデモンストレーションのために人気のある選択肢になることができます。

提案された方法における駆動シミュレーションソフトウェアと振動ツールキットは、我々の研究者22、23、24、25、26、27、28、29によって以前の研究ですでに使用されています。ISO規格30に準拠したこの自己開発振動ツールキットは、振動周波数と強度を調整することにより、異なるフィールド31、32に適用することができる。振動ツールキットの新しいバージョンが開発され、次のプロトコルで導入されることに注意することが重要です。調整可能な電圧アダプタを使用して振動周波数を調整する代わりに、新しいバージョンには5つの異なる振動周波数が装備されており、補足符号化ファイル1に記載されているコードを使用して簡単に調整できます。また、本発表のドライビングシミュレータは、安全で安価で効果的な方法で、さまざまな運転関連の研究を研究します。したがって、このプロトコルは、限られた予算を持ち、実験運転環境をカスタマイズする強い必要性を持っている研究所に適しています。

tactile vibrating toolkit and driving simulation platform for driving-related research

衝突警報システムは、気晴らしや眠気運転の防止に重要な役割を果たしています。これまでの研究では、ドライバーのブレーキ応答時間を短縮する際の触覚警告の利点が実証されています。同時に、触覚警告は、部分的に自律走行車の引き継ぎ要求(TOR)に有効であることが証明されています。

この論文で報告された模範的な研究は、以前に学術雑誌22に掲載されたドライビングシミュレータと振動ツールキットを使用して車に続くタスクを実施しました。振動ツールキットの古いバージョンは、模範的な研究を行うときに使用され、振動ツールキットの新しいバージョンは、上記のプロトコルで導入されたのは注目に値します。この研究は、指、手首、寺院の警告条件、およびコントロールとしての運転のみの状態の唯一の要因として、振動警告位置を持つ被験者内設計実験でした。各条件は13のランダムブレーキイベントで構成され、合計52の実験試験が行われた。条件の順序はラテン正方形のデザインと相殺され、すべての参加者は実験中に4つの条件すべてを受けました。
例示的な研究には、振動ツールキットを配置するための参加者の好ましい位置と、すべての試験の完了時に7ポイントのLikertスケールを持つ各場所(指、手首、寺院)の知覚された振動強度を記録した調査も含まれていました。毎日のウェアラブルアクセサリー(時計、眼鏡、イヤホン、リングなど)の利用率も記録されました。
模範的な研究のためのサンプルサイズを決定するための基準として以前のメタ分析がなかったので、中央値の効果サイズ(η p2 = 0.06)43、44、23人の参加者が80%のパワーに達する必要があり、30人の参加者が90%のパワーに達する必要がありました。清華大学の近隣地域から、正常または正常に修正されたビジョン、有効な運転免許証、運転経験を持つ合計28人の参加者が募集されました。4人の参加者がデータ分析から除外され、1人の参加者が研究から撤退し、3人の参加者が実験命令に従わなかった。外れ値解析は、平均からの標準偏差を3つとしてカットオフした正規分布を使用して行われています。データ分析に含まれる残りの24名(男性17名、女性7名)の平均年齢は23.88歳で、標準偏差は6.62歳で、最小必要なサンプルサイズ(すなわち23名)を満たしています。実験の指示は各参加者に与えられ、研究室に到着するとすべての参加者から署名入りの同意書が得られました。参加者全員がこの実験の目的を認識し、実際の実験が始まる前に練習試験が完了した後は何の懸念も報告しなかった。
運転シミュレーション実験は明るい環境で行われ、晴れた日に高速道路を走行するのと同様に設計されたシミュレートされたシーンが行われました。 図 5 は、例示的な調査で使用されたシミュレートされた環境のスクリーンショットを示しています。これは、各トライアルが12分続くシミュレートされた車のフォロータスクのみを有効にするように設定されました。先頭車両は平均時速40マイル(60.4km/h)で前進するように設定され、前部車両のランダムブレーキの時間間隔は、ブレーキイベントの持続時間を5秒にして30~60秒に設定しました。前部車両の平均加速度は0.6 m/s2 で、デフォルト設定35で行った。

正面風と横風の両方の設定が有効になっており、既定の設定のままに設定されています。最小および最大前頭風区間、風速、および前線風速は、それぞれ3s及び13s、2s及び3s、及び500N及び1,000Nであった。最小および最大横風間隔、風速、および横風速は、それぞれ3s及び8s、2s及び3s、及び1,000N及び2,000Nであった。
ブレーキ応答率に対する一方向反復測定(一方向ANOVA)は、4つのタスク条件の効果が有意であることを示し、F(3,69)=3.08、p= 0.049、η p2 = 0.31。 対方ボンフェローニ補正t検定を用いた後の一時的な分析では、有意な対対比較の違いは示されていない(図6を参照)。

一方向の ANOVA を使用したブレーキ応答時間の分析は、有意な結果を生成しました, F(3,69) = 4.76, p < 0.01, ηp2 = 0.17.ペアワイズボンフェローニ補正 t-テストが完了すると、参加者の指に位置する振動ツールキットでタスクを実行したときに、記録されたブレーキ応答時間が大幅に短くなりました(M = 1.04 s、 SD = 0.35 s) および手首(M = 1.00 s, SD = 0.33 s) と運転専用条件(M = 1.29 s, SD = 0.36 s) と p = 0.004 および p = 0.008 をそれぞれ示します。しかし、参加者が運転のみの状態(M = 1.08 s、SD = 0.50 s)と比較して、寺院エリアにある振動ツールキットで運転していたときに有意な結果は見つからなかった 、p = 0.22。 図7を参照して、結果は、触覚警告の適用は、特に警告装置がドライバーの指または手首に位置する場合、運転中に今後の危険に対するドライバーの反応を促進することができると指摘した。

スマートリング、スマートウォッチ、スマートグラスなどのスマートウェアラブルアクセサリーが複数市場に出回っており、ウェアラブルアクセサリーに触覚警告が出てきます。現在の研究では、ドライバーの緊急ブレーキ応答時間を促進する上で貴重な警告システムとしてのウェアラブルvibrotactileデバイスの有効性が確認されました。平均ブレーキ応答時間は、触覚警告装置を着用しないことと比較して、手首、指、および寺院にvibrotactileデバイスを着用した場合、それぞれ297 ms、251 ms、および210 ms減少した。現在の結果は、手首に届けられた振動警告が最速のブレーキ応答時間を生み出し、触覚警告を受け取らないのに比べてブレーキ応答時間が23%減少したことを示した。しかし、性別46、46歳、47歳、個人差48、49の触覚感性などの他の要因も触覚警告の有効性に影響を与える可能性があります。したがって、触覚警告装置を配置するための最適な位置を決定するために、より多くの要因を含むさらなる調査が必要です。この知見は、ウェアラブル型vibrotileデバイスの開発の価値を示しただけでなく、振動座10や振動ベスト50などの他の触覚警告システムと比較して、より安価で、より実現可能で、高度に作動可能な触覚前方衝突警報システムの潜在的な代替形態を提案した。

Quantitative Assessment of Cortical Auditory-tactile Processing in Children with Disabilities

Objective and easy measurement of sensory processing is extremely difficult in nonverbal or vulnerable pediatric patients. We developed a new methodology to quantitatively assess children&#39;s cortical processing of light touch, speech sounds and the multisensory processing of the 2 stimuli, without requiring active subject participation or causing children discomfort. To accomplish this we developed a dual channel, time and strength calibrated air puff stimulator that allows both tactile stimulation and sham control. We combined this with the use of event-related potential methodology to allow for high temporal resolution of signals from the primary and secondary somatosensory cortices as well as higher order processing. This methodology also allowed us to measure a multisensory response to auditory-tactile stimulation.

Measurement of Vibration Detection Threshold and Tactile Spatial Acuity in Human Subjects

Tests that allow the precise determination of psychophysical thresholds for vibration and grating orientation provide valuable information about mechanosensory function that are relevant for clinical diagnosis as well as for basic research. Here, we describe two psychophysical tests designed to determine the vibration detection threshold (automated system) and tactile spatial acuity (handheld device). Both procedures implement a two-interval forced-choice and a transformed-rule up and down experimental paradigm. These tests have been used to obtain mechanosensory profiles for individuals from distinct human cohorts such as twins or people with sensorineural deafness.

Here, we present protocols to determine vibration detection thresholds and tactile acuity using psychophysical methods in man.

Testing Tactile Masking between the Forearms

Masking, in which one stimulus affects the detection of another, is a classic technique that has been used in visual, auditory, and tactile research, usually using stimuli that are close together to reveal local interactions. Masking effects have also been demonstrated in which a tactile stimulus alters the perception of a touch at a distant location. Such effects can provide insight into how components of the body's representations in the brain may be linked. Occasional reports have indicated that touches on one hand or forearm can affect tactile sensitivity at corresponding contralateral locations. To explore the matching of corresponding points across the body, we can measure the spatial tuning and effect of posture on contralateral masking. Careful controls are required to rule out direct effects of the remote stimulus, for example by mechanical transmission, and also attention effects in which thresholds may be altered by the participant's attention being drawn away from the stimulus of interest. The use of this technique is beneficial as a behavioural measure for exploring which parts of the body are functionally connected and whether the two sides of the body interact in a somatotopic representation. This manuscript describes a behavioural protocol that can be used for studying contralateral tactile masking.

Here we explore contralateral tactile masking between the forearms in which tactile detection thresholds are modulated by vibration applied to a remote site. The details of which remote sites have an effect can tell us about how the body is represented in the brain.

A Microphysiologic Platform for Human Fat: Sandwiched White Adipose Tissue

White adipose tissue (WAT) plays a crucial role in regulating weight and everyday health. Still, there are significant limitations to available primary culture models, all of which have failed to faithfully recapitulate the adipose microenvironment or extend WAT viability beyond two weeks. The lack of a reliable primary culture model severely impedes research in WAT metabolism and drug development. To this end we have utilized NIH's standards of a microphysiologic system to develop a novel platform for WAT primary culture called 'SWAT' (sandwiched white adipose tissue). We overcome the natural buoyancy of adipocytes by sandwiching minced WAT clusters between sheets of adipose-derived stromal cells. In this construct, WAT samples are viable over eight weeks in culture. SWAT maintains the intact ECM, cell-to-cell contacts, and physical pressures of in vivo WAT conditions; additionally, SWAT maintains a robust transcriptional profile, sensitivity to exogenous chemical signaling, and whole tissue function. SWAT represents a simple, reproducible, and effective method of primary adipose culture. Potentially, it is a broadly applicable platform for research in WAT physiology, pathophysiology, metabolism, and pharmaceutical development.

A Novel Single Animal Motor Function Tracking System Using Simple, Readily Available Software

We have recently demonstrated that implanting intracortical microelectrodes in the motor corteces of rats&#160;results in immediate and lasting motor deficits. Motor impairments were manually quantified through an open field grid test to measure the gross motor function and through a ladder test to measure the fine motor function. Here, we discuss a technique for the automated quantification of the video-recorded tests using our custom Capadona Behavioral Video Analysis System: Grid and Ladder Test, or BVAS. Leveraging simple and readily available coding software (see the Table of Materials), this program allows for the tracking of a single animal on both the open field grid and the ladder tests. In open field grid tracking, the code thresholds the video for intensity, tracks the position of the rat over the 3 min duration of the grid test, and analyzes the path. It then computes and returns measurements for the total distance traveled, the maximum velocity achieved, the number of left- and right-handed turns, and the total number of grid lines crossed by the rat. In ladder tracking, the code again thresholds the video for intensity, tracks the movement of the rat across the ladder, and returns calculated measurements including the time it took the rat to cross the ladder, the number of paw slips occurring below the plane of the ladder rungs, and the incidence of failures due to stagnation or reversals. We envision that the BVAS developed here can be employed for the analysis of motor function in a variety of applications, including many injury or disease models.

The current study aimed to automate the quantification of motor deficits in rats. The initial evaluation model assesses motor loss resulting from an intracortical microelectrode implantation in the motor cortex. We report on the development and use of a tracking algorithm using easily adaptable, simple, and readily available coding software.

Driving Under the Influence: How Music Listening Affects Driving Behaviors

Car driving is a daily activity for many individuals in modern societies. Drivers often listen to music while driving. The method presented here investigates how listening to music influences driving behaviors. A driving simulation was selected because it offers both a well-controlled environment and a good level of ecological validity. Driving behaviors were assessed through a car-following task. In practice, participants were instructed to follow a lead vehicle as they would do in real life. The lead vehicle speed changed over time requiring constant speed adjustments for the participants. The inter-vehicular time was used to assess driving behaviors. To complement the driving behaviors, the subjective mood and physiological level of arousal were also collected. As such, the results collected using this method offer insights on both the human internal state (i.e., subjective mood and physiological arousal) and driving behaviors in the car following task.

Here, we present a protocol to assess driving behaviors while following a vehicle in a simulated driving environment. The presented protocol is used to compare the impact of different auditory backgrounds on driving behaviors.

Characterization of the Sense of Agency over the Actions of Neural-machine Interface-operated Prostheses

This work describes a methodological framework that can be used to explicitly and implicitly characterize the sense of agency developed over the neural-machine interface (NMI) control of sensate virtual or robotic prosthetic hands. The formation of agency is fundamental in distinguishing the actions that we perform with our limbs as being our own. By striving to incorporate advanced upper-limb prostheses into these same perceptual mechanisms, we can begin to integrate an artificial limb more closely into the user&#39;s existing cognitive framework for limb control. This has important implications in promoting user acceptance, use, and effective control of advanced upper-limb prostheses. In this protocol, participants control a virtual prosthetic hand and receive kinesthetic sensory feedback through their preexisting NMIs. A series of virtual grasping tasks are performed and perturbations are systematically introduced to the kinesthetic feedback and virtual hand movements. Two separate measures of agency are employed: established psychophysical questionnaires (to capture the explicit experience of agency) and a time interval estimate task to capture the implicit sense of agency (intentional binding). Results of this protocol (questionnaire scores and time interval estimates) can be analyzed to quantify the extent of agency formation.

Here we present a protocol which characterizes the sense of agency developed over the control of sensate virtual or robotic prosthetic hands. Psychophysical questionnaires are employed to capture the explicit experience of agency, and time interval estimates (intentional binding) are employed to implicitly measure the sense of agency.

The HoneyComb Paradigm for Research on Collective Human Behavior

Collective human behavior such as group movement frequently shows surprising patterns and regularities, such as the emergence of leadership. Recent literature has revealed that these patterns, often visible at the global level of the group, are based on self-organized, individual behaviors that follow several simple local parameters. Understanding the dynamics of human collective behavior can help to improve coordination and leadership in group and crowd scenarios, such as identifying the ideal placement and number of emergency exits in buildings.
In this article, we present the experimental paradigm HoneyComb, which can be used to systematically investigate conditions and effects of human collective behavior. This paradigm uses a computer-based multi-user platform, providing a setting that can be shaped and adapted to various types of research questions. Situational conditions (e.g., cost-benefit ratios for specific behavior, monetary incentives and resources, various degrees of uncertainty) can be set by experimenters, depending on the research question. Each participant's motions are recorded by the server as hexagonal coordinates with timestamps at an accuracy of 50 ms and with individual IDs. Thus, a metric can be defined on the playfield, and movement parameters (e.g., distances, velocity, clustering, etc.) of participants can be measured over time. Movement data can in turn be combined with non-computerized data from questionnaires garnered within the same experiment setup.
The HoneyComb paradigm is paving the way for new types of human movement experiments. We demonstrate here that these experiments can render results with sufficient internal validity to meaningfully deepen our understanding of human collective behavior.

Applying Incongruent Visual-Tactile Stimuli during Object Transfer with Vibro-Tactile Feedback

The application of incongruent sensory signals that involves disrupted tactile feedback is rarely explored, specifically with the presence of vibrotactile feedback (VTF). This protocol aims to test the effect of VTF on the response to incongruent visual-tactile stimuli. The tactile feedback is acquired by grasping a block and moving it across a partition. The visual feedback is a real-time virtual presentation of the moving block, acquired using a motion capture system. The congruent feedback is the reliable presentation of the movement of the block, so that the subject feels that the block is grasped and see it move along with the path of the hand. The incongruent feedback appears as the movement of the block diverts from the actual movement path, so that it seems to drop from the hand when it is actually still held by the subject, thereby contradicting the tactile feedback. Twenty subjects (age 30.2 &#177; 16.3) repeated 16 block transfers, while their hand was hidden. These were repeated with VTF and without VTF (total of 32 block transfers). Incongruent stimuli were presented randomly twice within the 16 repetitions in each condition (with and without VTF). Each subject was asked to rate the difficulty level of performing the task with and without the VTF. There were no statistically significant differences in the length of the hand paths and durations between transfers recorded with congruent and incongruent visual-tactile signals &#8211; with and without the VTF. The perceived difficulty level of performing the task with the VTF significantly correlated with the normalized path length of the block with VTF (r = 0.675, p = 0.002). This setup is used to quantify the additive or reductive value of VTF during motor function that involves incongruent visual-tactile stimuli. Possible applications are prosthetics design, smart sport-wear, or any other garments that incorporate VTF.

We present a protocol to apply incongruent visual-tactile stimuli during an object transfer task. Specifically, during block transfers, performed while the hand is hidden, a virtual presentation of the block shows random occurrences of false block drops. The protocol also describes adding vibrotactile feedback while performing the motor task.

Tactile Semiautomatic Passive-Finger Angle Stimulator (TSPAS)

Passive tactile perception is the ability to passively and statically perceive stimulus information coming from the skin; for example, the ability to sense spatial information is the strongest in the skin on the hands. This ability is termed tactile spatial acuity, and is measured by the tactile threshold or discrimination threshold. At present, the two-point threshold is extensively used as a measure of tactile spatial acuity, although many studies have indicated that critical deficits exist in two-point discrimination. Therefore, a computer-controlled tactile stimulus system was developed, the tactile semiautomated passive-finger angle stimulator (TSPAS), using the tactile angle discrimination threshold as a new measure for tactile spatial acuity. The TSPAS is a simple, easily operated system that applies raised angle stimuli to a subject&#39;s passive fingerpad, while controlling movement speed, distance, and contact duration. The components of the TSPAS are described in detail as well as the procedure to calculate the tactile angle discrimination threshold.
