NCIS  consists of two designs: the nursing process and the critical pathway design.

The nursing process design ensures organized documentation using well-established formats like admission assessments, care plans, and discharge planning instructions.

It involves creating a comprehensive task list for routine care activities, documenting various aspects of patient care, recording progress notes, and documenting medication administration.

Next, the protocol or critical pathway design facilitates effective interprofessional information management as healthcare providers usually adhere to evidence-based protocols or critical pathways when recording care.

This design helps users to select the most appropriate protocols for individual patients.

An advanced system of critical pathway design integrates multiple protocols by using a master pathway to streamline patient care activities.
